The Proposal

September 14, 2018

JESSIE'S SIDE: We took a trip to San Francisco, CA last fall! We were out in the city everyday, enjoying beautiful weather and eating really wonderful food. Friday, September 14, we had planned to go to the Palace of Fine Arts. (See PHOTOS) Jameson seemed a little off and I had thought it was because of the day before. Two words.... wine tour. We had a beautiful morning, about 60°, sunny, and very little wind. Lucky us!! I found a patch of grass off the walkway to grab a picture. Jameson joined me and threw his backpack on the ground. I remember thinking, "Jeez, someone is really grumpy today". He said "Remember when Granny was in the hospital and I went to see her? Granny wasn't in the hospital; I went to see your parents." It hit me. I realized that he was going to propose and I started to cry. He got down on one knee, not that I could actually see him through the flood. I can't remember what he actually asked or what I responded with. I do remember the Asian tour group passing by, taking pictures and clapping. JAMESON'S SIDE: I had this ring in my travel fanny-pack for a week. Along with a proposal dream of standing at the precipice of the Pacific as the sun’s hazy hues were tucked in by waves. The stinging gales & crushing cold had other ideas. We were in awe at the spectacle of the Palace of Fine Arts. I kept thinking, “this is it, this is it, there it went.” I was so jittery, but upon a grassy knoll I began. I divulged my secrets & stories preceding this event. I got down on one knee & told her, “You are the only one for me, baby. I love you. Would you do me the honor of spending the rest of your life with me? Will you marry me?” (Exposes ring.) She throws a fit. Tears the size of pearls well in her eyes. Her own excitement blinds her from seeing me or the ring. Cheers & applause are heard in the background. Some Asian family snaps photos like, “these Americans & their ridiculous rituals; must capture.” On our grassy knoll we basked in the glorious day.

Why Leap Day?

How did we come up with Leap Day, you ask? About a month after we got engaged, we had our first real discussion about what we wanted at our wedding. If any of you know Jameson, one of the first things you recognize is that he does not like being hot. Our apartment stays at a constant 68°and I am eternally in sweats, with a blanket, year round. Summertime was out. Apart from our personality traits of our sneezing habits, we both love the fall. But so much happens towards the end of the year, we didn't want to add anything to the madness of the last three months. Jameson had mentioned February because it was between our birthdays. It would be cold in February (point for Jameson) and there is a chance--a teenie, tiny chance, but still a chance--that it could snow (point for Jessie). A winter wedding!! When we started looking at the Saturdays in February, we both realized very quickly that Leap Day was one and our date was settled. Once every four years, we plan to make our anniversary a special one.
