The Tinsmith is a 1925 Madison-original Trachte brothers building transformed into a stunningly unique event venue in downtown Madison. Offering over 9,000 square feet of open floor plan, 23’ ceilings, and a 1,000 square foot 4-season solarium. The Tinsmith History: Madison natives George and Arthur Trachte were tinsmiths by trade and invented the world’s first modular metal building. They received a patent for their metal truss system in 1922, 19 years before Quonset huts came into existence. In 1923, Trachte Brothers begin to market their steel buildings throughout the Midwest and southern states. Identified by their barrel-vaulted roofs utilized as garages, aircraft hangars, gas stations and restaurants, Trachte’s early structures, such as The Tinsmith, are still found around the Midwest - serving as an important part of history. Figure from George A Trachte and Arthur F Trachte’s patent application for a metal truss filed July 28, 1922. This design is featured in The Tinsmith building at 832 E. Main St.
