In typical fashion, we met at a party. Which party has always been up for debate between us. We were both freshmen at the University of Louisville... 10 years ago! One of us has memories of a date or two happening, the other does not, but nonetheless we were friends that occasionally crossed paths before Jess headed back to Wisconsin to finish school. Over the years we would continue to check in with one another once in awhile, always saying "we should go to a game sometime." Thankfully, during Jessica's medical school rotations in Cincinnati and Lexington, we reconnected and FINALLY went to a Louisville football game on November 7th, 2015. The Cards beat Syracuse 41-17! That date (and that win!) were worth the wait. We have been cheering on the Cards, trying new restaurants and breweries, and traveling together ever since!
September 3rd was a very special day even before the proposal, because it is Alex's birthday! He woke up that morning like a kid in a candy store acting very excited that he was officially one year older! He was poking fun at me and being playful all day, simply stating "I can do what I want, it's my birthday!" I didn't recall him being that excited last year, but didn't think much of it. Turns out he was excited (and he says pretty nervous too) because he knew he would be asking me to marry him later that night. We were traveling to one of our favorite cities and frequent travel spots, Asheville. He had made reservations at one of our favorite restaurants, Edison. The sunsets here are stunningly beautiful, and it had become one of our traditions to go have dinner and a cocktail at sunset during our vacations. He got the best table overlooking the terrace and had masterminded the proposal plan with the restaurant staff in on it! Our server had agreed to take our photo during sunset. So, Alex kept asking her if it was a good time to take the photo and she kept saying "not time yet." All the while, other restaurant patrons were crowding our table because we had the best spot! I was getting irritated that our dinner was interrupted. Alex was getting nervous. Finally, it was time. Our server/photographer told us where to stand and I smiled at the camera. Alex got on one knee. Somehow, this man surprised me and it was more romantic than I ever could have imagined.
