Jesse first laid eyes on Maggie in the wild jungles of middle school. Maggie sang "Misty" by Ella Fitzgerald in the school talent show while Jesse stopped daydreaming about being a jedi Spider-man for 3 minutes to double-check that his eyes and ears weren't broken. "This girl has the voice of a woman!" he thought. It would be another 5 years before the two interacted, but Jesse never forgot about that performance. Cut to: High School. Jesse and Maggie have heard of each other at this point. Both have performed in the school's Coffee House shows and sat at adjacent lunch tables for years (coincidence?). One day the two happen to attend the same local play with some mutual friends. Maggie greets Jesse by name and laughs at a joke he tells, unwittingly sealing her fate as the object (person) of his affection forever. He casually makes sure they sit together during the play, so they can talk. He casually asks a mutual friend weeks later if Maggie has been invited to the same swing dancing lessons that their group plans to attend (she hasn't, he casually says he can't go either). He casually asks Maggie if she would perform a song with him at the next Coffee House show. She says yes. He not-so-casually asks her to prom. She says yes! Finally, after chickening out the night of prom, he asks her out the next day. For the next NINE YEARS the two would stay together despite living at a distance. They attend different colleges, but call each other every night. They live in different cities after graduating (Detroit and Cleveland), but visit every available weekend. Eventually, they both move to an apartment in The Big Apple, an intersection of a career in film and a career in refugee policy. Through good times (like being selected to sit in the front audience row at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and bad (like being moved to the back the following year), they made NYC their first home together. Everything was worth it. In April of 2019, they are engaged.
