How We Met

Kayleigh's version: "My sophomore year of college, my roommate Grace and I were randomly invited to play in a mud volleyball tournament over the weekend. We only knew a couple people on the team, but we decided to go anyways. I didn't know Jesse at the time, but he stood next to me in the line-up. Someone threw the muddy volleyball over the net, and in an attempt to be helpful I reached my hand up to try and catch the ball. Instead of catching it, I deflected it right into the face of Jesse. He was less than amused. We ended up winning the entire mud volleyball tournament and I forgot about meeting Jesse. I didn't hear from Jesse until he texted me later that week and asked if I wanted to grab lunch with him on-campus. I agreed and thought either two scenarios could happen. Scenario 1 was that it would be the most awkward hour of my life and scenario 2 was that he would become a really good friend. We met at Panda Express on campus and had the best conversations. I laughed so hard and had an amazing time. We walked through campus and as we were departing he asked if he could take me on a date. That was scenario 3 that I had never considered. I immediately said yes. 2 and a half years later, we are getting married! :) Jesse's version: "I met Kayleigh playing at a charity mud volleyball event at WKU. My roommate and I had won the mud volleyball tournament the year before, and we had to come back to defend our title. We joined a team with Kayleigh's roommate Grace because we knew she was good at volleyball. We arrived and began meeting all the different members of our team. Kayleigh came up to introduce herself to me. She said, "Hi, I'm Kayleigh!" Imagine the sweetest girl saying that in the sweetest tone. Then I responded, "I know." Imagine a rude and know-it-all guy saying this in the most 'I don't care' tone possible. We went our separate ways until the games started. We were next to each other in the rotation, so we exchanged a little small talk. The last thing I remember about my interactions with Kayleigh came in one of the last games we played. She was next me squishing her feet in the mud and laughing at the sound. I looked directly at her and said, "What are you doing?" Imagine me saying this in a very judgmental tone. Kayleigh simply told me that she liked the sound and thought it was funny. I thought she was crazy. Following the tournament, I went around asking her friends if she was single. Once I knew that she was, I went in our group chat and found the number I didn't have saved. I texted her and asked her to lunch on campus at Panda Express. It was a great lunch where we laughed and ate and talked the whole time. I asked her out shortly after. That is how we met.
