Dan actually "dated" my dad, Steve (aka Captain Esteban) first. It should not come as a surprise that Dan loves to fish. As it so happens, my dad also loves to fish. Dan and Steve ended up in a fishing "forum" I endearingly refer to as "LookingToHookUp.com". So, Dan and my dad met online and started up a chat. A little while later, Dan and his brother came down to Fenwick to fish. Dan and I met in passing a few times, usually when I was just getting home from a shift at Seacrets, or Dan was getting off the boat covered in bait and fish blood. Over the years, Dan and most of his family visited Fenwick to fish on "Gettin’ Jiggy." My mom and Dan’s dad would joke about their children finding someone. They even went so far as to joke about setting us up with each other. Dan and I both obviously resisted this “setup”. As fate would have it, July 2021, Dan came down to the beach for an overnight fishing trip. I was home from residency for the weekend. Given this was an overnight, the boat left the dock later in the day, so I was awake to see them off. I went about my usual morning routine and decided to make breakfast for the crew - a pork roll breakfast sandwich. The next day, when Dan got back to the dock, he complimented me on my breakfast sandwiches and we struck up some light conversation. Fast forward two weeks. I was back at the beach on break and told my parents Dan was coming down for the weekend. My mom looked outside and looked at me and said, "Really? The weather isn't great for fishing. Did Dad say he wanted to go fishing?". I replied, "Dan is coming to see ME". My dad’s only reply was a confused face and unintelligible mumbling. It did rain that Saturday and left with limited options for activities, the awkwardness was unbearable. Luckily, the weather finally broke Sunday and my mom suggested we go clamming at Assateague. We came home with a basket of clams. After teaching him the proper technique (he wanted to smash the clams together to break them) we hung out on the dock for a few hours just shucking clams. After that weekend, Dan quickly became a regular staple at the beach, splitting his time between seeing me and continuing to fish with Captain Steve. My Dad even asked me, if we ever broke up, can I please "let him down easy" so Dan would continue to be his fishing buddy. Thank goodness he doesn't have to worry about that anymore. - Jess
