We met on a Sunday morning, in the dining hall of Hillsdale College, when Skyler ventured out to have brunch with her roommate Annie's friends. Jerry said a friendly hello, proceeded to carry on a morbid conversation about World War I, and Skyler left the meal thinking she should probably keep her distance from such strange people in the future. This plan, of course, ended up falling through, and we spent the next year developing a friendship built on mutual respect and an eagerness to learn about each other's interests. From Saturday dinners with friends to hours of conversation stolen between classes in the student union, we grew to look forward to telling each other anything and everything that crossed our minds. In the tumultuous aftermath of the Dreaded Cookie Incident, Jerry and Skyler both took the time to reflect on their current friendship. Skyler, who harbored feelings by this time, wept openly to her roommates; Jerry, much less aware, pondered: "Does she like me? Do I like her?" The answer to both questions, as it turned out, was yes. We went on our first date on March 5, 2022 and began forging a relationship that grew strong enough to endure summers spent apart, a semester spent in entirely different countries, a full year of long-distance following graduation, and the ups and downs of daily life. Just months after Skyler finally managed to land a new job and a new apartment in Tallahassee, Jerry formulated a cunning plan to get the engagement ring to Florida with minimal suspicion. He only managed to occlude his intentions after a useful and unwitting assist from Chloe, who convinced Skyler that nothing suspicious would happen on May 3rd. He brought her to a garden and distracted her (and himself) with an alligator as he mostly failed to steel himself for the question. We sat down at the preordained spot, and as his heart rate reached terrifying new heights and Skyler, fearing a medical emergency, prepared to ask him what was wrong, he finally asked her to marry him. As had been the case over three years before, the answer was, of course, yes. We're blessed to have found and developed a relationship built on the best foundations we could ask for - God's love and mutual friendship. Thank you for celebrating with us as we prepare to start our lives together, with God as our guide and you as our community.
