Actually, you probably can stay up to 10 days in China without a visa! To use this visa-free transit, you would need to visit a third country (e.g. Japan, Korea) during the itinerary, it's fine if this is just a layover as you still get the boarding passes for each flight. The main restriction is that the stops before and after China cannot be the same country (e.g. your itinerary cannot be USA -> Japan -> China -> Japan), and that with this method you can only visit select cities such as Shanghai and Beijing while you're in China.
