To drive in Italy, you are required to have an international driver's license. To obtain one, find your local AAA location that provides this service, note that all of them do not. Come with a passport authorized photo, your valid driver's license, and $20. AAA will prepare it for you while you are there. Please keep it on your person when driving. To safely navigate around Italy on Google maps, we recommend downloading a map of the area. Instructions on how to do so: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6291838?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid In Italy, the standard transmission is manual. Make sure when booking a rental car, to reserve an automatic car. Contrary to popular belief, Italians drive on the same side as the US. However roads are usually very narrow and intersections are replaced with roundabouts. When getting gas, pre-payment is required at kiosks near the pump. Some gas stations send an attendant to pump for you. Most major highways have tolls. When you get on a highway, take a ticket from the toll booth. When exiting the highway, insert the aforementioned ticket to pay. The "avoiding tolls" option in Google maps is an easy way to bypass this.
