While on a clinical rotation in Colorado, Jerika decided to install a dating app just for fun. She narrowed down the critera as much as possible and before long, David popped up and began messaging Jerika. After 5 days of talking they decided to meet in person at Hacienda, satisfying the favorite cuisine of the two. Upon entering the restaurant, Jerika called David the wrong name while David was a true gentleman with flowers in hand. The rest of the night went much better than the inital impression and after David scraped the snow off Jerika’s car, they agreed to meet up again in a few days. Jerika and David dated for the next two months while Jerika was in town for the holidays. Before long sparks were flying! By the end of the year, they both knew it was right. In fact, David had secretly already bought an engagement ring, though it would take many more months before he could use it. On January 3rd, Jerika drove back to Michigan to finish her physical therapy degree, and the two continued a long distance relationship. They stayed in touch by taking every night over FaceTime and counted the days left in the semester. February came and went and so did March. And then the world blew up. Jerika had only 6 weeks left to finish out the semester and her final clinical rotation, but overnight school went online and her clinical rotation was postponed indefinitely. Having no real reason to stay in Michigan and wanting to be home in case things began to shut down all over, Jerika decided to head back home to Colorado. After telling David of her plans, David bought a plane ticket to Michigan to help Jerika pack up and drive her home.
The next 2 months were some of the best and some of the worst. Jerika was still finishing classes and trying to study for her board exam while adjusting to living at home again. David’s job remained pretty steady as he already worked remote. Because everything was shut down in Colorado, the two made the best with what they had available to them and spent long days and nights going on walks and hikes, playing games outside, and hanging out with their families. David and Jerika spent most of their free time together, and unfortunately for David, that meant that he got to hear all about how stressed Jerika was with her studies and always worrying about her test and finishing school, etc. Finally, after 3 test cancellations, Jerika was going to take her exam. David and Jerika took 2 flights and drove 2,000 miles to help Jerika and her friend take their exam and soon enough the test was over and Jerika could begin her search for a physical therapy job in Colorado.
In June, the two took a trip to California to meet some of David’s extended family and take a break from the stresses of job hunting and covid. They explored San Francisco, went ziplining through the redwood forest, and went on an unfortunately hilarious kayaking trip through a swamp. The weekend was full of fun and adventure, but Jerika knew this trip was more than just a fun getaway. On the night of June 27th, David suggested they take a walk on the beach to watch the sunset. Being uneducated about the cool weather in San Franciso year round, Jerika was very unprepared for this walk on the beach. Being one who always lets everyone know when she is cold, Jerika told David several times that she was freezing and asked how long the walk was but David assured her that there was a really good spot just a little further. After reaching the destination, David told Jerika he had made a playlist of music for them to dance to. With teeth chattering and body shivering, Jerika tried to ignore the cold. Finally, the last song came on. A very special song that David had written specifically for this occasion and for Jerika. It told the story of their relationship, and at the end, David was on one knee and asked Jerika to marry him. She said yes! How could she not? ——— On March 27th, exactly 9 months later, we will be married and we can’t wait for you to join us!
