Melissa and Jeremy met in 2010 as camp counselors at Camp Bernie. They quickly realized how much they enjoyed being around each other and became best friends. After years of friendship their relationship grew into something more and they began dating.

On September 21, 2019, Jeremy persuaded Melissa to go down the shore with the promise of visiting Jenkinson's Sweet Shop for fudge, chocolate covered gummy bears (their favorite candy), and in hopes of spending one more day at the Tiki Bar before the summer season ended. After having a great day at the beach, they returned to Melissa's parents' house. Jeremy proposed in the backyard under a canopy of lights that he had secretly set up the day before.
