On Friday, January 16, 1959, Mountain Shadows Resort opened its doors in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Perfectly nestled below Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain, the resort earned its namesake from the shadows cast by the iconic silhouettes each afternoon. The upscale locale was an instant success, catering to the likes of international travelers, visiting families and Hollywood stars. Meanwhile, Valley residents could own a slice of paradise by purchasing private homes that included special services and scenic views. In 1981, the resort was purchased by Marriott and utilized when the Camelback Inn across the street was full. In 2004, the resort closed, and in 2014 it was demolished and split into three parcels. One parcel was sold to local Westroc Hospitality and Woodbine Development Corporation, which partnered to completely rebuild the resort from the ground up. The new Mountain Shadows opened in 2017. Today, Mountain Shadows stands at the heart of Paradise Valley once more. Traces of the past can be found throughout the resort, from the name of the restaurant to iconic breeze block by the pool. Whether you follow in the footsteps of past globetrotters or happen to live down the street, every guest experiences the same warm hospitality, modern elegance and beautiful scenery that made the resort a beloved destination for decades. Rise Uptown Hotel combines the best of historic architecture and modern sensibilities. What was once two separate mid-century modern office towers has been completely re-envisioned into a contemporary boutique hotel with a distinctly delightful sense of style. The original towers were constructed during the Valley’s post-war boom, a time in which modernist architects left their mark. The Googie-style 444 building at the west of the hotel was completed in 1958, designed by Maddock & Associates. When it opened, it featured 30 offices including the penthouse space rented by prolific developer Don Woods. Due to high demand, the 400 building was added to the east in 1960, offering space for 40 more offices. Its contemporary style was the work of prolific architect Fred Melville Guirey. In 2018, work was undertaken to carefully restore the existing buildings while adding some contemporary style. New buildings included the pool area and a welcome building featuring our front desk and popsicle stand. The brand-new Rise Uptown Hotel opened in 2020, carrying on an important legacy of mid-century modern architecture in the Valley. Rise Uptown Hotel is where we took our engagement photos! We highly recommend trying their Spiked Dole Whip from Lylo. YUM. To Book, Simply Click VIEW & our rate will be applied. They're offering room rates starting at $115 plus a $29 nightly resort fee ($144 + tax).
