How We Met

During the pandemic, Tanner and Jenny download an app called Bumble, a dating app that gives the woman 24 hours to send an introductory message to the man she has matched with. They had both used the app before, deleted it, tried it again, all to no avail. But one day, Tanner opens the app and sees a certain Jenny Clair Higgs—a beautiful, down-to-earth girl from Conway who has travelled the world. Despite what he was told about not getting infatuated with someone before matching, Tanner couldn't help himself when he saw Jenny's profile. He placed his finger on the screen, "swiped right," and, to his relief, the two matched. Now, anyone who knows Tanner knows that he isn't the best at checking his phone... but he made sure to keep an eye out for Jenny's message that day. But hour after hour passes and still no message... Jenny had no way of knowing whether this Tanner guy was swiping for fun or seriously looking for a relationship, so she waited him out. As the 24-hour countdown neared its end, Tanner decided to use his one "Extend Match" credit to reset the countdown and give Jenny more time to send the first message. This time, Jenny could tell that he was truly interested in her, so she sent what would become the first of many messages. "He has a lot of bike pictures," Jenny remembers thinking to herself while looking through Tanner's profile. "That's cool he has a hobby he likes." It didn't take long during their first date at Hillstation for her to discover that cycling was much more than a hobby for Tanner. And it didn't take long for Tanner to realize that Jenny had a good sense of humor, and that he'd never have to wonder what she was thinking: "I am the one wearing the mask," she texted him as they searched for each other outside Hillstation in the middle of a pandemic. Sitting across from the backward-hat-wearing cyclist at dinner, Jenny didn't quite know what to think about Tanner, except that she liked something about him—the same something she saw in him two years later when he knelt in front of her, diamond in hand, cycling helmet by his side. In this moment, Tanner knew exactly what Jenny was thinking, long before she said "yes."
