Want to explore the many shops, restaurants and bars New Haven has to offer? Start at the New Haven Green and take in Downtown New Haven!
Founded in 1925, Pepe's is a family restaurant that serves New Haven–style pizza, which is a variation on Neapolitan pizza. What sets it apart? A thin and crisp crust with the requisite char thanks to the coal oven, an odd and not quite circular shape and a chewy dough, created through a cold fermentation process. In New Haven, mozzarella ("mootz") isn't standard so make sure you ask for it, but not on the establishment's most famous pie: the white clam. Topped with freshly shucked clams, garlic, oregano, olive oil and grated Parmesan, it's the dish to order. Another classic is the sausage and roasted red peppers.
Though Pepe's is the original, Sally's Apizza and its legion of passionate fans believe they've perfected the New Haven pie. Founded in 1938 by none other than Frank Pepe's very own nephew, Sal Consiglio, Sally's is located only a few feet away on Wooster street, producing one of the best pizza rivalries in all of the country.
The birthplace of the hamburger! The story of the first burger goes like this: In 1900, a man came into Louis' Lunch and said he wanted a quick bite to go. Proprietor Louis Lassen put ground beef between slices of bread, and the hamburger was born. DO NOT ASK FOR KETCHUP...but don't worry, there are plenty of signs to warn you :-)

Located on Whitney Avenue at Yale University. Founded in 1866 by philanthropist George Peabody, it is one of the world’s oldest and largest natural history museums.
Slightly less well-known than the other two giants (meaning shorter lines), Modern is more of a local joint that specializes in wood-fired pizzas -- as opposed to the coal-fired ones of Sally’s and Pepe’s -- with a smattering of fresh, artisanal toppings. Their Italian bomb pie (bacon, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, onion, garlic, peppers) is a tour de force.
