A handfasting ceremony is a wedding ritual that dates back to around 7000 B.C. Possibly the oldest form of a commitment ceremony and is where the term "tying the knot" comes from. Originally performed as an engagement ritual, after a year and a day, the couple was allowed to wed for life. Until 1753 it was legally binding, after this date a priest was required for a wedding to be legal. This ritual physically represents the spiritual union of a couple. The bride and groom join hands. A ribbon or cord is draped over their wrists and hands, to symbolize their commitment to each vow. Once the vows are complete, the couple exchanges rings. Once pronounced as husband and wife, the ceremony is sealed with a kiss. Then the couple pulls on the binding ends to form a knot. The tying of hands to one another symbolizes unity, commitment, and two people moving into the future "as one". Our handfasting ceremony will be binding - physically and legally.
