On May 23, 2019, a group of scientists set sail on a fourteen-day scallop fisheries survey out of Delaware aboard the R/V Sharp. The day before, the group met at 6:30 a.m. in Falmouth, MA, to carpool down to the boat together. Jenn and Joey were the first to arrive, awkwardly parking next to each other and avoiding eye contact until more of the science party arrived. It would later come out that they’d made the same first impression: each thought that the other had great hair, and each was disappointed that they weren’t riding down in the same car together. Luckily for them, they were both assigned to night watch: a twelve-hour shift from midnight-noon that would last for the entirety of the trip. With the Sharp being a small vessel devoid of TV, cell service, and internet, they got to know each other pretty quickly. Sleep deprived in the early morning hours, they bonded over their shared favorite band (Dispatch), and swapped stories about their lives, adventures, and misadventures of the like. Joey wasn’t all that discreet as he was turning on the charm, but evidently it worked because others claimed that they saw Jenn looking over at him with googly eyes. After fourteen days at sea together Joey decided the optimal time to ask Jenn for her number was at the dock in front of the entire science party. Equal parts mortified and delighted, she agreed. A few months later they started dating (as in, “going on dates”), and on January 15, 2020, they made things official. Since then they have adopted each other’s hobbies, spending their time surfing, skiing, beaching, hiking, backpacking, camping, cooking, walking, volleyballing, chatting, and laughing. On November 16, 2024, Joey proposed on Nantasket Beach in Hull, MA, during the moonrise, kicking off the next chapter of their lives <3 After six wonderful years together we can’t wait to celebrate our love at our WEDDING (!!) with everyone who has helped shape our lives. See you there!!
