Historic Smithville (also known as the Towne of Historic Smithville or Historic Smithville Village) is a charming, quaint historic village in Galloway Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. It started as a simple one-room stagecoach stop built in 1787 by James Baremore, which later became the original Smithville Inn. In the 1950s, a couple named Fred and Ethel Noyes discovered the abandoned structure during a walk in the woods, purchased it, restored it, and turned it into a small restaurant. From there, they expanded it into a full colonial-style village over the decades, creating a beloved South Jersey destination. Today, it's a picturesque, family-friendly spot that feels like stepping back in time, with: Over 60 unique specialty shops (everything from gifts and antiques to clothing and crafts) Several eateries and restaurants (including the historic Smithville Inn itself for fine dining with old-world charm and New American cuisine) Cobblestone paths, footbridges, a scenic lake with paddle boats, a carousel, and even a small train ride in season Free events and festivals throughout the year (around 30 annually) A bed & breakfast (like the nearby Colonial Inn) for stays. It's open year-round (except Christmas Day), super walkable, and just minutes from Atlantic City—perfect for combining a relaxed, historic vibe with beach/resort fun. Locals and visitors love it for shopping, strolling, dining, and making memories.
