How We Met

SUNY Cortland

It was February at SUNY Cortland and club softball tryouts were being held in the field house. I (Jenna) had just transferred to Cortland, and Riley was the secretary of the team; one of the four "officers" for the team. We were both outfielders, so we had to run drills together. Riley had really stood out, wearing a very color coordinated outfit. She was in front of me in line to field the ball, and the only words I could think to say were "nice outfit", which I did mean sincerely, to which she replied, "Thanks I didn't even plan this!". Being on the same team, and working together for Rec sports, we were forced to spend a lot of time together luckily leading to a wonderful friendship, and eventually a relationship.

Proposal Pt. 1

6/13/2020: Jenna's Proposal to Riley

I knew I was going to marry Riley very early on in our relationship. Marriage was something we had talked extensively about. She told me that she wanted to be together for at least 3 years before we got engaged. Our 3 year anniversary was February 1, 2020, I bought the ring February 4th (Thanks to Tina OG and Jewelry on James). We were supposed to go to Boston to see our favorite people Alli and Joe that April, and I was going to propose then. But COVID happened. Plans changed and I had to hold off. The ring sat in my nightstand, hidden under piles of mail and magazines. Businesses started to open back up just in time for Riley's 25th birthday. I thought it would be the perfect occasion to pop the question. I had arranged for us, along with a couple of close friends, to go to Anyela's Winery in Skaneateles to celebrate her birthday. I was so antsy the entire time. I just wanted it to be perfect. The time came when we all went out into the vineyard to take pictures. We stood in the middle of one of the vineyard rows, posed for a picture, and I got down on one knee and pulled the ring box from my pocket and finally asked her to marry me. It was everything I thought it would be. It was us and it was perfect.

Proposal Pt. 2

7/30/2020: Riley's Proposal to Jenna

Before Jenna proposed we had always talked about how we both wanted to propose to each other. After Jenna proposed to me on June 13th 2020, I knew it was time for me to start planning my return proposal to her! Jenna always said that she didn't want anything big and crazy, so I decided to do it at our first home! While Jenna was at work, I planned out the proposal, and hid all the pieces to the scavenger hunt that she wouldn't see when she walked in the door. When Jenna got home from work, she went up to take a shower and I put out the starting clue, spread rose petals all around it, and snuck out to the fire pit, which I had already decorated. When Jenna finished her shower she came down stairs to see "the mess" I had left her. The iPad was set up to capture a few of her grumbles before realizing what was on the ground. She then followed all the clues to find me at the end at our fire pit out back. The sun was setting, and watching her make her way across the lawn brought tears to my eyes. When she got to me, I got down on one knee and asked if she would marry me, she said "yes!" We were both officially engaged!
