Wedding Update

Love is Very, Very Patient

We regret to inform our family and friends that due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, and in an effort to protect the health and safety of our loved ones, we have made the difficult decision to downsize out wedding to include just our immediate families and bridal parties at a small celebration. We are planning on holding this smaller ceremony sometime in the summer when we can be outdoors and don't have to worry about freezing :) Thank you so much for your understanding and support during this time. We cannot wait to see you all in person again soon. With all our love, Jena and Luke

The Beginning: Her Version

7/12/2016

I found myself in a fairly constant state of activating a dating app, swiping no to a bunch of people (so many people in fact that I frequently saw the message "There are no more eligible singles in your radius.") One thing I learned through this process is that married people LOVE swiping on dating apps that didn't exist when they were single. My friend Kethan was having fun swiping for me when he came across Luke's profile. "Oh this guy. This guy is exactly your type. Can I swipe right?" Flash forward a day or two later and I get the notification that we have matched. I send the first message (about his skiing picture) and we set up a date at Brit's pub. We spent 3 hours talking and laughing and ordering food that we both didn't eat because we were too nervous. As he walked me home we tried playing Pokemon Go, but were unsuccessful in catching any... things? creatures? I honestly don't even know what Pokemon are considered, but he was cute and it was fun so I went with it. We awkwardly said goodbye to each other about 20 times. I think both of us were too nervous to just come out and ask for a second date. Luckily, it didn't take long for me to see Luke again. By random timing my parents happened to be in town a few days after our first date, and we ran into Luke at a local brewery. He came over, said hello, shook my parents hands, and then headed to sit outside. I was completely flustered and to help the situation my dad said, "Look I don't know who this guy is but you are a mess. If he really likes you he'll come over again when we are outside, if he doesn't ... well he doesn't really like you so don't waste your time." Needless to say, Luke popped over while we were outside and asked if we wanted a family photo. The rest is history.

The Beginning: His Version

Jena and I had our first date at Brits Pub downtown Minneapolis. We set up the date through Tinder so we had never met each other face to face prior, besides brief conversations on our phones. I arrived first, so I went up to the bar, ordered a beer and waited nervously for Jena. Shortly after sitting down, I noticed this tall brunette, wearing a black dress with Ray-Ban sunglasses sit down near me at the bar. I honestly can’t remember who said hi first and broke the awkward first meeting Tinder nerves (probably Jena). We say hello to each other and head upstairs to grab a table for dinner and some drinks. We sat down and looked over the menu, ordered two beers, chicken strips, and spinach and artichoke dip. Once the food came out between the two of us I think we maybe ate one chicken strip and practically none of the artichoke dip or took a sip of our drinks. I think it was due to a combination of nerves and being totally enamored by her. We exchanged dumb college stories, talked about our jobs, hobbies, and what TV shows we watched. Throughout all of these topics talking to Jena was never difficult, it was like we had known each other for years. After we had talked into the night we had to awkwardly tell the waiter to take away all of our uneaten food and drinks. Jena’s apartment was close by and I offered to walk her home. One of our topics of discussion during dinner was the mobile gaming sensation at the time - Pokemon Go (if you know, you know). As we walked together to her apartment, I attempted to open up the game on my phone and catch a Charizard to impress this girl I had just met. As fate would have it, the one time I try to use video games to my advantage my phone totally locks up and we can’t play. I remember Jena laughing at my attempts and excuses to get it work as we were walking.

The Proposal: Her Version

7/1/2018

I was interning in Boulder, CO the summer of 2018 and Luke was coming out for a week to visit. As we would talk through plans, he kept making sure that we would be hiking on Sunday. It didn't matter if I was talking about where we should have dinner on Tuesday, he would always confirm that there would be hiking on Sunday. Luke hates planning, so immediately my suspicions were raised. Flash forward to Sunday, and we head off on our hike, with Luke carrying two gallon jugs of water to make sure we weren't dehydrated, even though I told him it was unnecessary to bring that much water. At the top of Royal Arches, he found a secluded spot and proceeded with the most heartfelt, funny, wonderful proposal overlooking the city of Boulder. On our way down, he continued with all the things he felt he forgot to say at the top of the hike.

The Proposal: His Version

One summer Jena was living in Bolder, Colorado, working as an intern as part of grad school. Our relationship had gotten serious and I had decided that I was going to visit her for a week while she was out there and propose on top of a mountain during a hike. I tried as best as I could to casually suggest the idea of a hike to her without revealing the planned proposal. I think I got a little too pushy setting everything up that Jena was getting annoyed that I kept asking ... pretty sure she knew the whole time as we were hiking that day that I was going to propose. I decided it would be a good idea to carry up two gallon jugs of water on my back because hydration I guess. I also underestimated getting used to the altitude, handling jet lag and how that would affect the enjoyment of the hike. To summarize let's just say that we didn't make it too far and I was slightly struggling. Jena was supportive as always and kept us going. When we got to the top there was this huge rock formation that went over the hiking trail and overlooked the area below. You could see for miles, it was perfect minus one thing. There were people everywhere. I was hoping for a nice one on one personal moment with Jena. I reluctantly had to say okay when Jena asked if we were ready to head back down and frantically had to think of a plan B. As we head down I am in a panic and start looking all over for somewhere that is secluded to pop the big question. As we headed down I noticed another path that cut away from the main trail. So in the most casual way I could I asked Jena if we could explore down this trail. We only walked for a few minutes and the trailed ended at another rock formation that overlooked the areas below. So I took a breath and went on to explain to Jena that she was the best thing that had ever happen to me. I then got on one knee took out a ring and asked Jena if she would marry me. She said yes by the way!
