Before long, and after a very long email chain, they became each other’s favorite lab partners, note-sharing allies, and mutual crushes who pretended not to notice the obvious. After months of hanging out, grinding through exams, and grabbing food together, Crystal realized Jem was never going to make the first move. So she asked him out. What started as “just studying” shifted into Crystal watching Jem pretend he understood stoichiometry, and Jem pretending he wasn’t already thinking about asking her on a real date. Their first date at the skating rink was unforgettable in its own chaotic way: two fully grown adults clinging to the rail, sliding around like Bambi’s cousins, and acting like it was totally intentional. From there, they supported each other through school, moved to San Diego to finish college side by side, and slowly built a life full of food adventures, road trips, late-night talks, and shared dreams. Nearly over a decade later during a trip to Japan, after a failed mountaintop proposal plan, and Crystal getting sick. Jem got down on one knee on the balcony of their onsen hotel room.
