Jelani and Fabian first met on Instagram via a mutual follower. Fabian went on to follow Jelani, and shot his shot by liking a few of her pictures. This caught Jelani's eye, and she liked a few of his in return. A few days later, Fabian posted a story about his oldest son Kyle having a procedure, and Jelani responded to the story by sending well wishes. At the time, Fabian's post made it seem like Kyle was having major surgery, but in reality, he was just having his tonsils removed. Jelani's well wishes for Kyle really piqued Fabian's interest because Fabian has always said whoever he begins a relationship with; would have to genuinely love and accept Kyle. After checking out of the hospital the next day, Fabian decided to ask Jelani out on a coffee date. At the time, neither knew that the other didn't drink coffee, so after much discussion, they decided that a hookah lounge was a better fit.

In March of 2023, Fabian purchased the ring. He was initially planning to propose at their baby shower in July, but just couldn't wait. On May 18, 2023, Fabian surprised Jelani with an impromptu dinner date at Brenner's on the Bayou. Before going into the restaurant, Fabian popped the question outside, near the water.
