Things To Do

Katie Jo's Favorite Big Sur Day Trip Itinerary - Recommended to take a day to explore before or after the wedding day - A bonus to the trip is downloading the Big Sur tour on the GuideAlong app (~$10). Dave will tell stories of the local area along your drive. I usually bring a meal with me for lunch, but there are places along the way for food you will be able to stop at, too. There are a lot of pull off spots to take in the beauty, definitely take advantage of those!

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93923

If you start early enough and want to get your blood flowing a little bit to start the day, go on a short walk in this beautiful park and look for some otters and learn more about the area at the Whaler's House.

Garrapata State Park

34500 California 1, Carmel, CA 93923

Jeff and I had our first day trip together in Big Sur. We stopped at this beach for a picnic. The flowers, succulents, and Pacific Ocean are heard to not find breathtaking.

Big Sur River Inn

Big Sur River Inn

Park, grab an ice cream from the little bus, and sit on Adirondack chairs in the river!

Bixby Bridge

Monterey, CA 93940

A must see stop, this is a the site that you see when you Google "Big Sur" a beautiful bridge and great photo op!

Lots of Food Places

There a stretch here in the middle that has a lot of food options, just look around, I really like COAST if you can get there before 3pm!

COAST

Partington Cove Trailhead

Partington Cove Trailhead

California 1, Big Sur, CA 93920

The peak of the trip for Katie Jo! A short hike down to the water where you can split off in two directions - one takes you to an enchanting cove that seems fit for mermaids to be sitting on the rocks while one takes you through a tunnel to see the blue water crashing against the dark rocks of the coast. Carefully, you can climb higher on the second location to oversee beautiful swells and coastline.

McWay Waterfall Trail

McWay Waterfall Trail

McWay Waterfall Trail, CA 93920

I usually end my drive on Highway 1 at Partington Cove, but if you feel up to, continue driving a little longer to this iconic Big Sur waterfall for a paradise view created in nature.

Nepenthe

Nepenthe

On the way back up, stop at Nepenthe for the sunset. Explore the eclectic trinkets in the store and go up top for a meal inside or a hot tea or drink on the balcony where you can take in the beauty. This restaurant overlooks will give Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, it was designed by one of his students Rowen Maiden.
