We both ended up working at Camp Peniel in Summer 2024 after both failing to get summer jobs in Colorado. We came to camp with zero intention of dating anybody, and Jeb had every intention to gaslight himself into not liking any of the girls. He failed miserably. We were placed into the same staff family group so we got to start the summer off seeing each other a lot. Jeb had the Roderick Heffley mentality - deny, deny, deny. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't deny that he liked Kate - and he liked her a lot. Fortunately, the only other girl in the family group was Jeb's sister so he had a most trusted wingman right out of the gate. After a month of awkwardly sitting next to each other without trying to make it obvious, telling everybody we did not like each other, and raiding the kitchen of its pop-tarts together, Jeb finally asked Kate out on a date. We went to Putters and Gutters and ate Schlotzky's (remember to remind Jeb about how romantic he is). On our second date, Jeb accidentally touched Kate's hand, got scared, and apologized. But he figured it out eventually. A month into going on dates, Jeb asked Kate to be his girlfriend, and a year after being Kate's boyfriend, Jeb asked Kate to be his wife. And now we get to begin the next season on August 3, 2026!
Kate knew that we were getting engaged over the summer, but she didn't know when to expect it. But she figured it out anyway! We returned to Camp Peniel for our second summer on staff. Jeb had a whole list of places to propose, but couldn't boil it down to just one. So Jeb thought, "Hmm. Scavenger hunt." On July 18th, Jeb got to breakfast and told Kate, "Today's gonna be a great day" - something Jeb had never said before in his life. Kate knew immediately what he meant. Kate continued through her normal day, while Jeb tried his best to remain unsuspicious. He failed miserably. That afternoon, Jeb ran all around camp setting up hints that would tell Kate where to go next, while Kate actually did her job. After dinner, Kate attended a girls camp ceremony while Jeb prayed with some of his closest friends. At the end of the event, Brady "The Beast" Jensen delivered the first hint to Kate, and she was off. Kate started by driving to the place where we first said "I love you." Her brother was waiting there to hug her before she finished the scavenger hunt. Then Kate went to the spot where we talked about committing to long distance, followed by the hangar, where Jeb asked Kate to be his girlfriend. Kate hustled down to where we had our first conversation, before finally being told to make her way down to the creek. While Kate was driving around camp, Jeb was jumping up and down like a toddler with a pixie stick at his older brother's baseball game. Finally, Jeb heard the hum of the Gator and saw Kate running towards him. We got engaged at the creek at the bottom of camp, where we both realized that we had found the person we wanted to marry (the week after our first date!). God had painted a beautiful sunset, and everything about the moment was perfect. Afterwards, we went and celebrated with some friends and family, and tried to soak in every minute!
