A Proposal Story

Ching's Pond, The Road to Hana

Hawaii was stunning – a fun, sunny, relaxing, grand adventure. Day 3 in Maui we had a whole itinerary set out and planned: drive the infamous road to Hana stopping at all the scenic pull-offs until our mid-afternoon lunch reservation at one of the island’s finest restaurant (unbeknownst to us), topped off with a drive up Mount Haleakala to watch the sunset and star gaze. It was already the epitome of a perfect day. Warm, tropical, and full of exploration. As we drove the windy roads, hairpin turns and switchbacks, we found a little pull-off for Ching’s Pond. We climbed down the thin trail and scrubby embankment onto a rocky shore. Ching's Pond exposed emerald greens and teal blues, a small waterfall holding up the overpass surrounded by lush vegetation - it looked like something out of Indiana Jones. We had the place to ourselves and were playing with the drone when Travis started fumbling in his bag looking for something. I was suspicious and called him foolish thinking whatever he was looking for was left in the car. The next few minutes were filled with laughing, tears, and joy as he got down on one knee. We were in a tropical paradise, enjoying each other’s company, the adventure, and the moment. It was pure and full of love. We wrapped up the road trip – didn’t even get close to Hana – but made it to Mama’s Fish House, excitedly reported the good news of the engagement to the hostess and were immediately rushed to one of the premiere window seats, overlooking the roaring waves and swaying palms. We ate until we burst – the most excessive and delicious feast, full of luxurious excitement. We ended the day with a mountain summit drive, watching the sun go down over the ocean and island. It was perfect. A reminder that while most days are not perfect or even close to this blissful – there are those few moments when it’s just as it’s supposed to be.
