Ho Chi Minh City port (SGN) is one of the best port to travel to Japan, Korea, Thailand, or Singapore, etc.
If you choose to stop by Japan or Korea on the way, I would recommend to can get 1 way ticket to Japan/Korea -> then to Vietnam → then from Vietnam to ATL/US.
If you choose to flight to other closeby Southeast Asian countries or around Vietnam, I would recommend to get tickets from Hochiminh City (SGN) to close-by countries which are around 2-hour flight (Thailand or Singapore). Or, explore other local cities such as Danang, Hanoi, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Da Lat. They are all between 1 to 2 hours.
