How We Found Each Other

A swipe, a joke, and a lifetime of laughs.

We met on Hinge. Neither of us was expecting much. The conversation was easy from the start — the kind where you don't have to work at it. The humor lined up. Silences weren't awkward, but we always felt on the same page. By the fourth date, Bryan was pretty sure he had met his soulmate. He didn't say anything yet. He just kept showing up in little ways like meal prepping bulgogi for her during busiest work weeks, researching date ideas, listening to her passionately talk about her family, friends, and venting about work. Jessica believed in letting things grow naturally. She had a group of friends who'd known her since high school — the kind who ask the uncomfortable questions and think that's a compliment. She mentioned at some point that they wanted to meet Bryan. Mostly, she joked that it was because they needed help splitting the cost of a boat day. And yet he showed up anyway not knowing he would be interrogated by the FBI. Her friends pulled her aside the second they arrived and told her to go away. Bryan spent the next hour being interviewed: why do you like her, what do you want, where is this going, what are your streams of income? Shockingly, He wasn't bothered. If anything, it told him something — that Jessica had people in her life who took her seriously. That she was a good judge of character and surrounded herself with good people because they wouldn’t ask these kinds of questions unless they deeply cared for her. That mattered to him. She didn't witness any of that. What she noticed was that afterward, he was exactly the same. Very relaxed (happily laughing in fact), No weirdness, no complaints. He just kept showing up and being there in ways no other partner had before. She fell for the small stuff — the clumsiness, the quiet humor, the silly gifs and jokes to make her laugh in happy times and in sad times, and the way he could tell when something was off without her having to say it. They spent a lot of time planning things together, making spreadsheets that were probably unnecessary, figuring out what they wanted their life to look like. Watching him with his family — the pride he has in his Korean and Vietnamese roots, the quiet weight he carries as the eldest son — she understood pretty quickly who he was. Bryan was captivated by Jessica’s bubbly, caring personality and warmness. He thought she is a love that feels like home—steady, kind, comforting and endlessly deep, yet will sass you back if you wrong her. Love built the way it usually does in the form of quality time spent on late dinners, beach days, concerts, sharing hobbies, long conversations via phone or FaceTime when she traveled for work. We didn't rush it. And now we get to do the rest of it together, with everyone we love in the same room.
