Experimenting with online dating on a summer night in August, with a glass of wine in hand, Jazmin created a Match.com profile that included a one-month membership. Based on a keyword search of “dry humor” and “sarcasm,” Jazmin came across Alex’s profile, gave him a “wink,” and since then, the two have shared 6+ years of laughs and witty exchanges.

Alex’s Grandparents’ home in Brooklyn is the central hub for family gatherings. Each year, Alex’s family hosts a 4th of July BBQ and for some reason Alex wanted to throw a bigger party that year. Alex told Jazmin that he was inviting more of his friends that year and asked Jazmin to do the same. Jazmin was wary of inviting “too many” people to Alex’s Grandparents’ so she only invited her family and a handful of friends. In the weeks leading up to the 4th, Alex spent weekends and nights after work sanding and painting the deck in Brooklyn in preparation for the big event. On July 1st that year, Jazmin and Alex attended a surprise engagement party for Jazmin’s friend, Jenny (Nice job, Lynette!). It was there that Alex learned that Jazmin had not invited many of her friends. Once Alex told Jazmin’s friends’ his plans, with just 3 days’ notice, they were all in. Midway through what appeared to be a regular BBQ, Alex asked Jazmin to step out with him to get more ice and condiments. This departure was the cue for all of the flowers and decorations to come out of their hiding places. The entire proposal was themed to the couple’s favorite album, John Legend’s, Love in the Future. The perimeter of the newly painted deck was adorned with 16 small vases, each containing 3 red carnations (a play on the album cover and number of songs on the album). There were also small tokens that represented lyrics and song titles sprinkled all over the backyard. When Alex and Jazmin returned from the store, they walked into a completely different environment. With the couple’s favorite song from the album, “You and I” playing in the background, some awkward dancing, and ear whispering, Alex got down and asked Jazmin to marry him, and here we are!
