Due to the ongoing health emergency, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our big celebration this October. While we would have loved to celebrate with all of you, the uncertainties of how the situation will be in the fall have made us significantly scale back our wedding. We will still be getting married this October, however now we're opting for a private ceremony. We sincerely apologize for this disappointing news and we hope next year will be cause for much celebration. Please stay safe! Much love, Jayme and Chris
In Italian "colpo di fulmine" translates literally as "bolt of lightening" but it's significance means "love at first sight". They say that lightening doesn't strike twice, but it did for us! It struck for me when I saw Chris from across the room at Webster's Bookstore during a concert in November 2016. I was struck by his handsome face, the way he carried himself, and his style. My immediate thought was "HE is the guy I should be with!" and I kept stealing glances of him throughout the evening but never worked up the courage to talk to him. Fast forward to the end of January 2017. It's another local concert, this time at the magical, ephemeral place called Carpetland. Luckily, Chris got struck by that same fated bolt of lightening called love when he saw me-- dressed in a green tulle skirt and sporting my signature gold sparkly cat ears. Thankfully he worked up the courage to talk to me! And we talked all throughout the night until the sun was rising. Several more concerts shared at Carpetland, and a few months of getting to know one another, we became official on April 30th, 2017.
Chris has proven time and time again just how well he knows me, and his marriage proposal was even more evidence of this. It was perfect. Earlier that week he had asked me if I wanted to go to my favorite place in town, the Penn State Arboretum, to get dressed up and take some photos of each other. So we made plans to do that on Sunday, November 25th. Sunday rolled around and he went out to the farm to do some work... or so I thought! He came back home, we got dressed up and we drove to the Arboretum. The day had been pretty overcast, but as we drove on Park Ave towards the beautiful gardens, the sun revealed itself. We were taking photos of each other when all of a sudden I see none other than Lauren Elsasser Smith! My talented cousin who takes gorgeous photos! And I think "Okay, Chris is probably going to propose!" Lauren did a little photoshoot of us and then said "Well, I have other plans, so see ya!" I was slightly disappointed that Chris hadn't proposed then since it seemed so perfect, but I was still happy about how fun it had been! Chris then asked if I minded stopping at the Carnegie, where we both worked, to pick up some books that our head chef had left for him. So we arrived at the restaurant, and on the special Chef's Tasting Table in the kitchen were settings for two. Chris turned to me and said "I didn't have to pick up anything, I just wanted to make dinner for you to thank you for being such a great partner" I, overwhelmed with gratitude and love, went to the washroom to freshen up before we ate. When I returned to the kitchen, Lauren was there! with camera in hand, and I thought to myself "NOW he's going to propose!" Chris got down on one knee, with a ring box in hand, and said "I love you and I like you, and I don't want this to end. Wanna get married?" I answered with a simple but very enthusiastic "Yes!" He then made a 7 course vegan meal for the both of us including my favorite dishes-- from sage ravioli to blueberry cheesecake! Perfection.
