Answer

The tea ceremony is a meaningful tradition in which the couple formally serves tea to their parents and elders. It is a way of expressing gratitude, honoring family, and symbolizing the joining of two families. It is typically intimate and deeply sentimental.

Question

Is the tea ceremony the same as the wedding ceremony?

Answer

No — the tea ceremony is a separate cultural tradition. It focuses on family blessings and takes place before the banquet celebration.

Question

What should I wear?

Answer

For the banquet, attire is formal or cocktail attire unless otherwise noted. For the tea ceremony (if attending), guests may see the bride wearing a traditional red dress called a qipao or cheongsam. Red symbolizes happiness and prosperity. Please avoid wearing: All white (traditionally reserved for mourning in Chinese culture) Bright solid red (reserved for the bride) Otherwise, festive and elegant attire is welcome.

Question

What happens during the tea ceremony?

Answer

The couple will kneel or bow and serve tea to elders in order of seniority. In return, elders offer blessings and often gifts or red envelopes (hóngbāo). Guests typically observe quietly and respectfully.

Question

What kind of food will be served?

Answer

The banquet is a multi-course meal featuring symbolic dishes representing prosperity, happiness, and longevity. Expect seafood, meat, vegetables, and dessert courses served family-style. Come hungry! If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance.

Question

Is it customary to give a gift?

Answer

Red envelopes with a monetary gift are traditional for Chinese weddings. However, your presence is truly the greatest gift. A registry option will also be available for those who prefer it.
