Maid of Honor
We were pretty much raised as sisters at Johnson Center gym, between the swimming pool and badminton courts. Since then, we've lived far away from each other but I know I can always count on her.
Best Man
Jay’s first memory of Doug was in their youth skiing group on an Alta ski run named “Devil’s Castle.” Doug completely lacked fear—he jumped off any rock in sight—“hucking his carcass” as they called it. It made a strong impression on Jay. They have been skiing together ever since. Doug and Jay joined Wasatch Freestyle team to compete in moguls skiing. They skied the mogul circuit for a few years together, until Doug found he had a knack for big air competitions, while Jay remained a moguls competitor. They never stopped making turns together, and as well as becoming best ski friends they developed a friendship that was more akin to brotherhood. Jay swears that Doug sometimes knows Jay better than Jay knows himself, so Jay couldn’t think of anybody more perfect to be his best man.
Bridesmaid
My littlest shrimp Lillie is the best baby sister a person could ever want. Funny, kind-hearted, and absolutely ridiculous, Lillie has grown up into a real human being and I couldn't live life without her.
Groomsman
Jay first met Artie on their interview for the WashU MSTP. While Artie probably remembers himself as handsome and chic, Jay remembers Artie as nice and having common granola-esque outdoorsy interests. They continued to bond at WashU’s second look. They ditched the other students to go explore Forest Park. Their friendship blossomed over first year of medical school—they had a famous bromance that was well known to the rest of the medical school class. They danced together in the boy-band competition. Jay and Artie even cooked for each other—they traded crockpot meals to help ease the stress of medical school. In spring of that year, Artie began dating his now-wife Sonya Liu, and a few weeks later Jay began dating Mindy. So now, instead of cooking for two, Artie and Jay cook for four.
Bridesmaid
Phuong is the one that got away...she left me for Los Angeles and I've been sad ever since. She's the best travel roommate and I wouldn't rather have eaten 4am al pastor tortas with anyone else.
Groomsman
Jay and Sage were unlikely friends: Jay a mogul skier, and Sage a ski racer. But Jay was just up-tight enough (for a mogul skier) and Sage was just relaxed enough (for a ski-racer) that it could work. They first met through skiing, however in a wild stroke of luck, they randomly ended up at Westminster college together. They had various misadventures together, including building a garden together. Sage went to grad school in Urbana, IL and the two hour drive meant that Jay could regularly visit Sage and vice versa. They even surprised each other at their 30th birthday parties—more the unexpected because they lived in different states at that time. Sage lives in California now, and even though the visits are less frequent, Jay gets to go wear himself out surfing every few months with Sage.
Officiant
In addition to being Doug’s dad, Joe is like a second dad to Jay. Joe saw Jay grow up from the punk ass 12-year-old mogul skier who didn’t have the time of day for an old fogie’s advice, into (what Jay hopes) is a kind, compassionate young man who enjoys life and doesn’t take himself too seriously. Joe has been so generous with imparting his wisdom on Jay, and was there for Jay when Jay lost his dad. Joe taught Jay lots of life lessons about competition, hard work, and having fun.
