The easy answer: we both went to Tulane. The actual answer: we met halfway around the world in Prague. Trading the festive and bacchanal atmosphere of New Orleans in Fall for the Bohemian charm of Prague, we met while abroad. Despite having many mutual friends, living a block away on campus, and having roommates who were dating one another—we somehow never actually met until the first day of our semester abroad. Jay arrived after a few days in Madrid and Julia arrived with lost luggage, completely unaware that this major life milestone would be experienced in the same clothes she flew in. We kept crossing paths around Europe, with fate apparently giving us a sign in a new European city every few weeks for good measure. We coincidentally flew to Rome together before Jay left Julia alone to meet her friends in a narrow back alley (he promises not to do that when they’re married), happened to stay at the same hotel in Amsterdam, and then finally went on a planned trip together with friends to London. What really cemented us together was Czech class. Jay’s Czech teacher went on maternity leave, which moved him into Julia’s. We sat next to each other, could not stop talking and joking through class, and refused the teacher’s incessant requests to stop. To this day our Czech is limited, but it seems like a good tradeoff. We started officially dating when back at school in New Orleans and have continued the spirit of dating in new places. Post-college life took us to Chicago, New York & most recently a jaunt as COVID-nomads in South Florida where we got engaged. We’re looking forward to seeing where in the world we go next, side-by-side, and hopefully not in a place that requires decent Czech.
