For several years we attended the same ministry and worked together on various projects. As the years progressed and our friendship grew, we both realized that it was something special between us and decided to see what this path would lead us to.
For the proposal I, Ja'Whay, wanted to make it into a memorable and special event for my soon to be bride, Shantel. I planned the entire day starting with her makeup being done, secondly taking our engagement photos, and lastly her "surprise" birthday party which was a disguise for the actual engagement. This event included close family and friends who have supported us throughout the years. As we entered the restaurant I'm sure Shantel didn't expect the room to be decorated so beautifully and all the individuals present, but I wanted to be sure that everything was about her and that this would be something we could share with our kids and they can share with theirs. So, as I began the "birthday" presentation to Shantel, I decided to utilize a modern and traditional theme, something old, blue, borrowed, and new. For something old, roses were bestowed because they were the first gift I presented her with on our first date. For something blue, a stuffed animal was given because she is an animal lover. Now for something borrowed, it was special because her Mom, Carol Hodges, was able to present Shantel with a bible that was passed down through her family lineage and it was done in memory of Shantel's Father, Anthony Hodges Sr. who has passed. In regards to something new, I got on one knee and asked the most beautiful lady in the room "will you marry me?" and she tearfully and joyously accepted.
