Big Sur is a rugged and stunning stretch of California’s central coast, extending roughly 90 miles between Carmel and San Simeon. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, Big Sur is characterized by dramatic cliffs that plunge into the Pacific Ocean, expansive coastal vistas, and pristine beaches. The region is dotted with redwood forests, some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world, and is home to diverse wildlife, including sea otters, condors, and whales. The Pacific Coast Highway, which runs through Big Sur, offers spectacular views at every turn. Iconic landmarks include McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that cascades directly onto the beach, and the Bixby Creek Bridge, a marvel of engineering framed by sweeping ocean views. The area’s combination of rugged coastline, serene forests, and dramatic natural features creates an awe-inspiring landscape that attracts visitors from all over the world. https://www.seemonterey.com/regions/big-sur/ https://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/history.html

San Jose (SJC) is the closest major airport San Francisco (SFO) is the other major airport in the Bay Area
Drive to Big Sur: From SJC, the drive is 2-2.5 hours without traffic From SFO, the drive is 2.5-3 hours without traffic Allow extra time, it often takes longer than anticipated. Note that the HWY 1 route option is a longer, scenic route with stunning coastal views!
A section of HWY 1 south of Big Sur is currently closed for repair. This isn't a problem for us traveling from the Bay Area (SFO / SJC), but it is worth noting for anyone planning to drive up from the south side of Big Sur (e.g. from LA). Allow extra time if so. Check for updated road closure info before your trip: https://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/highway_conditions.html
Some, but it’s limited. Be prepared to be without it at times. Plug in your destinations into your map app before you head into Big Sur and download maps for offline use.
Fall in Big Sur generally means dry, warm weather and clear skies. However, the area is known for its microclimates, so the weather can change from one mile to the next even within the same day. You could get warm sun in the redwoods and foggy clouds on the coast. Bring layers! Prepare for mid-50s at night to low-70s during the day.
It’s a good idea to fill up the gas tank and run any errands before entering Big Sur. Carmel and Monterey are the nearest large towns (and lovely places in their own right). You’ll pass them on your way to Big Sur if you’re coming from the north/Bay Area. Big Sur is currently unreachable from the south due to a landslide. If you are coming from Southern California, prepare for a longer drive. Check for updated road closure info before your trip: https://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/highway_conditions.html
Please RSVP by Aug 31. You can text or email Elyse or Jason directly :)
Sadly, Big Sur is not a dog-friendly locale. It's unlikely she'll be able to join us. She is, however, taking appointments for visits in the bay before and after the wedding... ;)
