Rachael and Jason met 6 years ago while working together on Catalina Island. Jason had noticed a copy of his favorite science-fiction novel, Dune, lying on a beach towel, and was keeping an eye out for the owner. He was a bit surprised when the owner turned out to be a pretty young woman in a bikini sun bathing with her friends, rather than another bespectacled nerd with a nose covered in zinc like himself. His first words to Rachael were a little surprising to her as well. “Is that your Frank Herbert book?” he asked. It took her just a moment to realize he was asking about the book on her towel, which she had only started reading that day. The book had been gifted to her by her Uncle John, who had suggested that in her literary exploration she expose herself to some science-fiction as well. By chance, it had been the only book she had plucked from her suitcase, which wouldn’t arrive until the following day. “Oh….Dune? Yes, that’s mine.” His reply was both charmed and amused, “Can I just say that you are the last person I thought was going to sit down next to that book.” They laughed at their odd fortune, and found conversation and friendship came easily between them. Their story, like most good love stories, started with a bit of happy chance, a dash of fate, and the easy grace of kindred spirits finding each other in the chaos. It has not always been as easy as that first introduction, but their love for each other has only grown since that day. Now they have made the choice to commit to love and respect one another, to declare their partnership amidst friends and family, to explore this life as a team, and to be sources of strength and inspiration to one another on this journey… to the Moon and back!
