HOW WE MET

December 2006

When I was in the second grade, my family moved to South Carolina where we received a warm welcome in the Seneca Church of Christ. Two years later, Jason's family moved to Seneca and chose to call the SCOC home as well — which is where we met for the first time. We were in the youth group together, separated by a few years. We had more of a love-hate relationship back then as we harassed one another with games such as trying to slap each other by surprise, not-so-playful pillow fighting at Lads to Leaders, and of course the one where Jason would try to drown me in a pool... love-hate as in we loved to taunt the other and hated being the one getting taunted. Somehow, our rivalry ≠ romance, so it wasn't until 2013 that we began to see each other in a new light (amazing what a few cat pictures and silly selfies can do). After Jason went off to college, we lost touch, so we got to know each other all over again that fall. Turns out, instead of growing up to become Jim and Pam we may have grown up to become Jim and Dwight; we still loved to pester and prank each other. Nevertheless, Jason asked me out on a date to Smokin' Pig; if you've ever been there, you know that may very well be the reason why we are getting married. Or maybe it was how he showed me he was different than the rest by coming to my ugly Christmas sweater party and staying to help clean up afterwards or offering to part with his beloved beard to take me on a date. Whatever the reason, we bonded over barbecue on that chilly winter evening, and the rest is history!

THE PROPOSAL

July 3, 2017

It wasn't long after we started dating that I felt pretty sure that Leah was the one. However, since we began our relationship over distance while I was at Alabama, there was no rush to take that step. By no accident, two years later we were both living in Rock Hill. Seeing that we could tolerate seeing each other a few times a week, rather than once a month, I felt that I had all the information I needed. In May of 2017, while Leah was in Clemson for a month, I did all my research on the 4C's, became a diamond expert, and acquired the perfect ring. I was all ready, besides having no idea how I'd propose. I wanted it to be special, but also not too obvious. Fast forward two months; my family was going to visit my brother and his wife in Chattanooga. At the last minute, Leah was able to join us, so I added the ring to my packing list. I should probably mention, I hadn't told a soul about the proposal. I wanted it to be a surprise, so I had no help planning, and due to weather, our rock climbing plans kept changing. Finally, on Monday, we decided to go to Foster Falls. I slipped the ring into my backpack, and off we went. As we spent the day climbing the cliffs, Leah impressed everyone by scaling a challenging 60 ft. route. If I hadn't already decided, that would have done it. On the way out that evening, we hiked along the top of the cliffs. As we walked up to an overlook with a gorgeous view of the valley and waterfall, I lagged behind and nervously moved the ring from my pack to my pocket. In an instant I had decided, this was it. Everyone admired the view and moved on, but I had Leah stay. I got down on one knee and told her that I had loved watching her grow into a beautiful young woman, but that I wanted much more to watch her grow into a beautiful old woman. Of course, she said yes, and we were able to go down the trail and see everyone's excited, surprised reactions together. It was a great end to a wonderful day, and greater start to something much bigger.
