It was 2013 when Jason found out he would be moving to Michigan. As a kid who grew up in the Texas heat, he thought it would be nothing more than a bitter cold experience; little did he know, he would end up meeting Jenell, the girl who would warm his heart. Although fate brought them together within the same city, same church, and even the same high school, the timing wasn't yet right, on God's clock at least. All the minor interactions, glances, quick smiles and hellos towards each other amounted to nothing significant (or so it seemed) over the time Jason was in Michigan. And quickly enough, a year flew by, and Jason found himself back in Houston for college. One day, a few years since they had last seen each other, Jenell, still in Michigan, happened to post a story on her Snapchat with a caption saying how she just "100% failed that chem exam.” Jason, now in Houston, happened to see her story on his feed, and remembered just how awful chemistry class was back when he lived in Michigan. He also remembered just how pretty Jenell was every time she would pass him by in between classes, and how nervous he would be just to say "hi." Intuition suddenly took over, and he made the fateful decision to respond to her story; the rest was history. He replied saying how much he thought "chemistry sucked," but funny enough, his reply over a chemistry exam was what ultimately sparked the chemistry between themselves. From that moment on, one reply turned into another, with neither of them wanting to let the conversation die. Over the next few months, that spark turned into a flame as they shared laughs, life stories, and connected over common interests, tastes in music, aspirations and goals; soon enough, their bond became undeniable. Ultimately, it led to Jason booking a flight back to Michigan to see if this was something real. It was during that first trip where they both realized that their digital interactions were blossoming into a genuine connection, and definitely something worth pursuing. Jason continued to make trips to Michigan to spend more time with Jenell, and before they knew it, they decided to embark on a long distance relationship together. As expected, LDR had its challenges. Their relationship was tested, both juggling responsibilities with school, church, and life, all while being a thousand miles apart. In the midst of all of that, they were able to stay strong in their relationship despite the distance. With God's help and blessing, Jenell was accepted into graduate school in Houston in 2021, and the two were finally able to close the gap. It was in Houston where their relationship flourished even more, reaching a point where they knew this was something they wanted forever. And so, on the night of May 5th, 2024, soon after Jenell’s graduation ceremony, Jason surprised Jenell, with family and friends present, got down on one knee and proposed. So who ever said long distance relationships never work out? Through God's grace, they made it work, and will continue to rely on His guidance in this new chapter, together.
