June 5th 2009. I remember because it was the day before my mom’s birthday. It was the summer between Sophomore and Junior year of college. Some girlfriends of mine, who stayed on campus for the summer, invited me to a house party. Parties were always a big deal on campus. I expected this to be no exception. I called my fellow Purchase alum Brittany to join me. When we arrived, we discovered no party. Instead, we walked into a living room with guys whom we had never met. We discovered our girlfriends in the back room relaxing. Instead of being disappointed, we joined the girls. I had no interest in leaving the room to engage with strangers. All of a sudden there was a guy attempting to call someone out of the room. I dismissed him. I thought he must be trying to get the attention of one of the other girls. After a few minutes, we made eye contact and he smiled. I pointed to myself and he gestured me to meet him in the hallway. He introduced himself as Nick and we started chatting. I remember laughing and feeling intrigued by him. As we engaged in playful banter, another guy kept trying to inject himself into our conversation. He did not want to accept that it was Nick I was interested in and not him. In a desperate attempt to gain my attention, the other guy kissed a mosquito bite on my arm. Why use that as a move to pick up a girl is beyond me. Nick right away got us out of the awkward moment by asking me to dance. Anyone who knows me knows I love dancing. Before leaving Nick asked me on a date. Jaded by my previous experiences I replied boys aren’t interested in dating anymore. He replied tomorrow then it’s a date. I was shocked at how straight forward he was. I was used to boys playing mind games. I told him I couldn’t, it was my moms birthday. He insisted we go the day after then. His phone had died, with no paper in sight, he wrote my number on a piece of cardboard. The date happened as promised and here we are close to 10 years later.
June 5, 2009: I was at college party in Purchase College. You know, just a typical night with my boys trying to get drunk and see what girls would give any one of us the time and day. Hell, we would have been happy with just a conversation. So after, drinking my Hennessy in a sophisticated manner, we ended up in the campus apartments. So now, here I am, in a random apartment with the boys. At this point, the guy to girl ratio is in favor of the females, and I was getting a little bored and upset. It wasn't until I made my way to the restroom that a certain someone caught my eye (I think you know who I'm talking about). She said her name was Jasmine, and then we engaged in the typical small talk, such as where we're from, our hobbies and interest, etc. The thing that made the situation awkward was that she showed me this huge mosquito bite on her arm, and right after showing me her bite, my friend in some desperate attempt to try and make a move on her, kisses her bite and walks away. So now you're wondering, how do I pull myself out of this awkward position? Luckily, my Latin senses kicked in and I hear bachata playing in the background. Immediately remembering that she enjoys dancing, I ask her to dance with me, and in the middle of the apartment, we steal the spotlight. As the night winds down and my buzz starts to dissipate, I quickly ask her for her number. Without hesitation she gives it to me. We exchange numbers, I call her the next day and set up a date for the following day, and in the most cliché manner, the rest is history. But if it weren't for that bottle of hennessy, and my boys desperate attempt, I wouldn't have mustered the courage to meet and talk to the most beautiful woman in my life.
