It had only been three weeks of dating when Jas was preparing to leave to Maui for a solo trip, which she had planned months before. The night before her departure, she was spending her last night with Michael in San Francisco at his apartment, wishing he was coming with her. The following day she caught her flight to Maui and texted him constant updates. After checking into the hotel, Jas grabbed her phone, ready to take a picture of her room for Michael. But before she could, she noticed he had sent her a photo. She opened it and gasped. Michael’s photo was of a plane reservation - his one way ticket from SFO to Maui, which would bring him to her in just a few hours.
It was the last day of their trip together and after a sunset dinner at Hula Grill, Jas and Michael took an evening walk. For days, they had each individually been thinking - “I just wanted to shout out I love you!” They barely made it 10 feet out of the restaurant when Michael stopped walking, pulling Jas to a halt as well. “What?” Jas said. “I love you.” “I was thinking the same thing! I love you."
For their first anniversary, Jas and Michael returned to Maui but this time visited a different side of the island. They arrived on the island with 7 days of a full packed itinerary - volcano stargazing, ATV riding, hikes and more. They only ever made it to the ATV riding! After taking one day to enjoy the Wailea beach, they just couldn't bring themselves to leave it for the rest of the trip. Turns out Wailea beach has some of their favorite sunrises and sunsets and they didn't want to miss even one.
There they were, two years of dating, back in Hawaii and eating dinner at a dimly lit Ferraro’s when Jas brings up the subject of Michael proposing..again. Michael chuckles and says “Oh, did you check the bread basket?” and gestures that he may have hidden a ring inside the bread. There in the middle of a romantic and quiet restaurant, Jas immediately grabs the bread basket and proceeds to start ripping up their loaf of focaccia looking for a ring. No ring to be found, she looks up at Michael sad and confused. He immediately feels bad and says “Aw, honey it’s coming I promise.”
Only a few days after their Ferraro’s dinner, Michael finds himself in a tricky situation. Without Jas knowing, he has already bought her a ring and had it shipped from Jean Dousset in Melrose, Los Angeles to Wailea, Maui. With only two days left on the trip for a proposal and still no ring to be found, Jean calls Michael. He explains "I may have to send my assistant to go intercept the ring." Michael asks, "Where is it?" "It’s stuck on Oahu.” Trying to remain very calm, Michael responds "Let's wait till tomorrow afternoon, maybe it'll get brought then."
It's the second to last night of their trip and Jas and Michael have planned a picnic on Chang's Beach. When they arrive at the beach, Michael sets up the picnic and positions a GoPro camera. He tells Jas the camera is to take a time lapse of the sunset. She believes him. Once sitting down, Michael pulls out of a loaf of bread from the picnic basket. He hands it to Jas and tells her to look inside. Jas refuses to look and says "Oh no, I'm not falling for this again." Michael pleads to just look. She does and as expected no ring. He says, "Okay you were right no ring, but let's take one last picture before the sunsets." Jas stands up for a photo and Michael pulls her in close. He starts telling her about when he knew she was the one and starts to pat his back pockets as if he's looking for something. Jasmine is so sure he's trying to make her think he's carrying a ring on him when he isn't! But then Michael gets down on one knee, pulls from his pocket a ring box, and asks "Will you marry me?" Completely surprised and elated Jas screams, "Oh my god! Yes, yes, yes!" And the ring only made it with two hours to spare.
Even with the wedding planning challenges of this past year, we feel so grateful things have worked out the way they have. Lanai is one of Maui's three counties and a truly special place for us. Originally an island-wide pineapple plantation, Lanai is now known for its quiet beauty. We can't wait to exchange our vows on Lanai with our family and friends.
