Our Love Story

Our story began on 19 February 2021, when Katie was visiting family in Canberra from the Gold Coast. Her cousin invited a few board-game-loving friends over for a games night, and among them was Jarl. What was meant to be an evening of cards and competition quickly turned into hours of talking, laughing, and realising that something just clicked. As we stayed up talking, the SingStar game kept playing ‘Hey There Delilah’ on repeat—a song about long distance love that, looking back, felt like a little sign of what was to come. Two days later, Katie drove back home, but the connection stayed. We added each other on social media, started messaging constantly, and before long, Jarl asked Katie out on a FaceTime date. Daily calls quickly became our routine. On 9 March 2021, Jarl asked Katie to be his girlfriend, and not long after, in early April, he flew up to the Gold Coast. We spent that entire week inseparable, and by the end of it, we’d said “I love you.” For the rest of 2021, we did long-distance, flying back and forth every month, braving sudden COVID lockdowns between Queensland and Canberra. In August, the border closed, and we spent three long months apart. When it became clear the border wouldn’t reopen anytime soon, Katie decided to take the leap. Eight months into our relationship, she moved to Canberra and moved in with Jarl… and it was the best decision. Since then, life has taken us all over - moving to the Gold Coast, then back to Canberra, camping trips, weekends away, nights drinking wine, playing board games, video games, and introducing our fur babies: Winston the English Staffy, and Evy the Tonkinese cat (who is still not happy that she’s no longer an only child). Then came the proposal, just shy of our three-year anniversary. In December 2023, while visiting family in Canberra, Jarl, who had been secretly carrying a ring for months, finally found the perfect opening. On 22 December, Jarl suggested they “go for a walk and a drive.” With no set plan, he took Katie to the lake, then, thanks to Canberra’s unpredictable weather, changed course to the National Gallery Sculpture Garden. Inside the Within Without installation, with sunlight shining down through the opening above and not another person in sight, Jarl asked Katie to close her eyes so he could “show her the best view from the centre.” She believed him completely. Guiding her by the hand, he took her into the centre of the sculpture. After a brief struggle trying (and failing) to play their song with no reception, he abandoned the plan and asked her to open her eyes. There he was, waiting on one knee, ring in hand as he asked her to marry him. Katie burst into the biggest smile (and tears), and said yes. In 2025, we finally ticked off our dream trip to Europe, which made us fall even more in love with travelling. Next on the bucket list: Japan for our honeymoon in 2026. And now, after everything: long distance, lockdowns, moves, adventures, cozy nights in, and big dreams ahead, we are so excited to celebrate the next chapter of our story with you.
