Jane was on the patio of a bar in Germantown one late Tuesday afternoon and swiping through Tinder. Richard appeared on her screen holding a puppy. She read his bio and browsed the photos of him and his dog, playing a guitar, and one of him grinning in his Ryan Adams tee. She swiped LEFT. As soon as she did, she stared at the next profile, but was struck by her intuition. She frantically googled "How to go back after swiping left on Tinder" and then shelled out her credit card for a premium membership. When she did, they matched! She messaged him, "Thank God! I had to buy a premium membership so I could go back and swipe right!" Under the pink and orange sky, they messaged back and forth and learned that they both had plans to see the same political documentary at U of L the following night, so they agreed to go together (along with his friend Carter). Over the next several months they took a trip to Chicago, went to political rallies, visited his parents in Seattle, and spent nights in, with Richard playing guitar and Jane singing along. When Richard ran for office three months in, they committed to support each other. They celebrated Richard's birthday in May, and went on a cabin trip for Jane's birthday in June, and then one night she turned to him and asked when they could start wedding planning. The next week Richard would buy the ring and slip it on her hand after dinner. On Valentine’s day, Jane and Richard held a small legal ceremony in the presence of their pets and witnesses. Save a champagne toast, they reserved the big celebration for their families and friends.
