How We Met

9/1/2003

Jane and Fraser met when Wellesley junior Jane decided she was tired of walking to her work-study job in Bates Dining Hall. She chose her next workplace by playing "Eenie, meenie, minie, moe" with the three dining halls nearby--Beebe, Pom, and Caz. Fraser's dining hall was "moe". (Fun fact: the wedding officiant, Paul Clain, was his boss.) A discreet interval later, they started dating. (Actual time pursuant to Wellesley College handbook, mind ya business.) Dating involved a lot of driving around talking about books and movies and music, and looking for places to make out where they would not be disturbed by the police, active serial killers, or teenage employees of the local movie theaters. After Jane graduated, she roamed the US for over a decade: teaching in Texas, working in Wisconsin, and learning how much culture shock one human being can physically withstand. Fraser stayed in Massachusetts and became more Eastwood-esque. There were silences for months or even years; but sometimes, there would be a text, and on Jane’s visits to Boston, she always made a point of seeing Fraser. They would drive around and talk about books and movies and music, and if neither of them were seeing anyone else, they would make out. (Not in the car. Progress!) In 2016, Jane moved back to Boston. She and Fraser drove around and talked about books and movies and music, noticing that their interaction—which had always been sparky and fun—now also felt comfortable and easy. They had known each other for thirteen years. They made out in Jane’s apartment, and during a discussion about leaving toothbrushes over, realized they still had feelings. Big ones. They decided to try a relationship. There was still a lot of driving around talking about books and movies and music, but now there was also cooking food and playing board games and going grocery shopping together. (Plus lots and lots of making out.) It worked—both exactly the same, and better than ever before. Here we are.
