In February 2020, practically on the eve of the pandemic, Kyle had the first of his many good ideas. He decided to drive out from Vegas to LA for just one night to go dancing at a bar with some friends. Jenn also decided to go to the same event and drove up from Long Beach to hang out with her swing dancing friends. It turned out that we had a few people in common! Every typical LA guy in that bar seemed to look the same – we like to refer to them as the sartorial barbers. And then there’s Kyle, wearing a bright yellow vintage shirt and a pinky ring. When Jenn walked in, he stopped mid-story and said “Who’s the redhead?” We danced, Jenn gave Kyle her business card, and he gave her the Shifty Devils button right off his jacket. Jenn’s mom said “In my day, that means something!” Kyle hatched a sneaky plan and talked our mutual friends into hosting a party for St. Patrick’s Day, so he’d have a reason to drive back and see Jenn again. But by then, the Covid-19 pandemic had taken hold, people were going into isolation and quarantine; and we had to cancel that whole idea. We followed the rules for a few months, and during the weekend when it was supposed to be Viva Las Vegas, we planned a video date. Kyle bought Jenn a vintage blue satin dress as a surprise, he put on a suit to match; and we chatted, had cocktails and listened to records for about seven hours straight! After that, Kyle and Jenn gave up and we have essentially dated in reverse and sort of illegally across state lines. The first time we ever got to go to a restaurant together was about six months into our relationship! Several more of Kyle’s good ideas later, we are the fun couple who have a fantastic 1959 vintage home in Las Vegas and are ready to declare officially to the world that we’ve both found our person.
