Buckle up and keep your seatbelts fastened while the seatbelt sign is on — this love story is a long one (and with a pilot in the mix, you know we had to start with an aviation pun)! It all began in December of 1995, when Ian entered the world in Long Beach, California. Not long after, his family relocated to the suburbs of Detroit, where he spent his Midwest childhood before moving to Newport Beach, California at age 10. Meanwhile, Jamie was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, in August of 1996. She grew up in the Midwest until the summer she turned 14, when the Adamson family also made the move west to Newport Beach. In 2010, both Jamie and Ian began their freshman year at Corona del Mar High School (CDM). Go Sea Kings! Fast forward to the 2011 Winter Formal — they each arrived with different dates but found themselves seated at the same dinner table. Jamie, still “the new girl,” remembers Ian making her laugh nonstop and bonding over their shared Midwest roots. Ian’s first memory of Jamie? A little fuzzier — something about lockers — but he swears he remembers her smile. They went on to date a few times throughout high school — a couple months at the end of freshman year, again sophomore year, and then a longer stretch junior year, where they went to both Winter Formal and Prom together. Even through their teenage “breakups,” their friendship always stayed strong — and so did their big, shared group of friends. They both graduated from CDM in June, 2014 — Jamie headed to the University of Kansas with dreams of returning to Chicago for her “big girl corporate job,” and Ian to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, determined to become a pilot and maybe live in Alaska someday. They stayed friendly in college but eventually lost touch — not crossing paths again for over six years. That is, until Thanksgiving weekend of 2021. Jamie was living in Chicago but home for the holiday. She had promised her mom she’d stay in for the night to play cards with family — until her phone started buzzing. Her friends wanted to go out on the town in Newport for Hangover Turkey Day. More phone buzzing... a selfie of Gunnar and Ian with a caption that read "stache insists you come out." What was more shocking — that Ian had a mustache, or that he was actually living in Newport again? Either way, Jamie hit the town that night. They picked up right where they left off and spent the next day on a three-hour hike catching up on everything they had missed. Turns out they'd both followed through on those high school dreams. The two stayed in touch, seeing each other again over Christmas and then in January, when Ian conveniently had work trips to Chicago. The next year and a half was a mix of some long distance, flight schedules, and figuring out what was next — until Jamie made the big move back to Newport Beach in Summer 2023. From there, Ian officially added Jamie to his companion pass, and the adventures took off — quite literally. Together, they’ve traveled the world: Ireland, London, Tahiti, Singapore, Japan, Mexico, France, and more — always chasing sunsets, good food, and new stamps in their passports. Then came August 2025. Ian proposed at a very special place in Jamie’s life — her family’s New Buffalo, Michigan lake house, at the exact “sunset chair” she’s sat in almost every summer since childhood. The surprise didn’t end there — their families showed up the next night in Chicago, and friends surprised them the following day. After nearly 15 years of knowing each other, countless flights, and a few teenage heartbreaks, this story has come full circle — and it’s just taking off. Jamie and Ian are so excited to celebrate their story and love with you on July 17, 2026 in the city where it all began - Newport Beach, CA.
