Packing Tips

Spring in Hong Kong is warm and slightly humid with cooler evenings. You may experience a few light showers, so make sure to pack an umbrella! HK uses 220 voltage and 3 prong UK-styled plugs. Bring adapters as necessary.

Language

The main languages are Cantonese and English, and English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and transportation. Most signs are bilingual, so it’s very easy for visitors to navigate.

Travel Note

Currency

The local currency is the Hong Kong Dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, but small shops and taxis may prefer cash.

Travel Note

Octopus Card

The Octopus Card is a rechargeable tap-and-go card used for nearly everything — from MTR rides and buses to convenience stores, cafes, and even vending machines. You can download the "Octopus for Tourists" app and recharge directly on your phone, or you can buy a physical Octopus Card at the airport, MTR stations, or convenience stores (this will require you to have cash).

Taxis and Ride Apps

Taxis are plentiful and relatively inexpensive in Hong Kong. You can also use ride apps like Uber if you prefer app-based booking. Most taxis accept cash, and some now take cards or Octopus. Have your destination written or saved on your phone to show drivers.

Public Transportation

Hong Kong’s subway system, the MTR, is extremely clean, safe, and efficient. It’s often the fastest way to get around the city and connects most major neighborhoods and attractions.
