Most couples remember things like their first kiss or when their official dating anniversary is. That's just not us. In January 2010, I moved into a duplex in a less than savory neighborhood and quickly became friends with the kid next door. We spent every afternoon on the front porch hanging out, talking, laughing. It took us over a year to admit that either one of us had any interest past that and the rest is history. I wish I knew all of those important dates, but being with him just felt so natural that I never paid attention. Now almost a decade later, we're getting married! How crazy is that?!
Cody took me out to a nice steakhouse for my birthday last year. As we sit down, the manager comes over and wishes me a happy birthday and sets down a champagne glass. I'm thinking, "Wow! How cool, free champagne!" So clearly, I start sipping on it and Cody asks, "Does your champagne taste funny?" "No, why?" I say as I continue to sip. "Metallic, maybe?" I shake my head as he exclaims, "Just look at your glass!" The very moment I see the ring in the bottom of the glass, a waiter (who clearly missed the memo) appears at our table and begins explaining the menu. He dives into grave detail about the specials and the different cuts they offer. I. Hear. Nothing. It feels like an eternity has passed when he leaves the table. At this point, Cody must have thought that I would fish the ring out so he could propose but instead, I torture him with minutes of video. The bubbles coming off the ring were really cool! Not to mention, I now have a great video of him sweating it out before he could ask. I finally hand him the ring. He says some stuff about loving me. I say yes. We kiss. Then the rest of the restaurant notices and a couple from another table tell us to do it again so they can photograph the event for us. It may not have been smooth but a memory we will never forget!
