Every year James and I would go to Roswell, NM for the biggest flag football tournament in the U.S. This particular year when we first met we played together on a coed team. It was semi-finals and we were down a touchdown. As the other team drove down the field they went for a hail mary in the end zone. James and I both went up for the interception. As he caught the ball and ran it back into the end zone for a pick six, I caught his elbow. Once he turned around and realized I was on the ground ran back to see if I was ok. Knowing my head was split and covering my forehead with my hand, my only question to him was, "But did you catch the ball !?" As I got stiches to come back to our championship game he called his mom and told he, "I met the coolest girl." Thats the only year we both have ever won. Lucky for us 5 years later we would reconnect and now we get to be life long teammates.
We finally had a cloud free day in Seattle. I had decided that the space needle would be a good place to propose, so that it would always be special, and remind us of that day when we’d see it in pictures and media. Maddy had the day off, and I got off early. Asked her if she wanted to grab smoothies and go to the space needle. I remember she look so perfect, because she had done her hair and make-up so nice for her drivers license photo that day. We take the elevator up, and we weren’t allowed to talk because of Covid rules. We walked out on the all glass observation deck, and tell Maddy, “we should take a picture.” I ask a lady who is already taking pictures, if she’ll take one of us with my phone. I point in the opposite direction so Maddy will turn her head, I get the ring case out of pocket and drop to a knee. When She turned around, I looked in her surprised eyes, and I asked her if she’d Marry me? Luckily she said yes.
