Our Story

The Chaos of a Choice

Our lives are filled with infinite choices that dictate the trajectory of our worlds. Hot or Iced Coffee. To-Go or Dine-In. Lazy night in or expensive romp around the town. Our love story can be boiled down to a very simple choice, left or right. Dating apps may have a bad reputation but without them we would never have bonded over our knowledge of competitive swimming. Our first face-to-face meeting had some hiccups, Eryn met James at the door wearing bright teal Crocs and James got in his own head when Eryn didn’t let him pay for the date. Somehow, both of us started to sense a bond being formed. We talked about our families and the truly mystifying quirks that are better known up front than sprung on months down the road. We discussed both of our engrained competitiveness and how sports has a chokehold on both of our lives. We even talked about how we both had had very unconventional paths that lead us to be attending the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Inexplicably, Eryn was not annoyed by James' strange jokes and at times off-putting sarcasm, so a second date was planned. During that second date, James smoothly wooed Eryn by letting her know her red sweater made her look like Mr. Rogers. Once that comment didn't drive Eryn away, James knew he had found a winner. The young couple looked at the summer ahead with wonder and excitement for the young love to blossom. Then a global pandemic shut everything down. Then Eryn's Grandpa Rog died. Then James' Grandma Bernthal died. It had been four months. We had been thrown through the ringer. We got strained at points. It seemed almost hopeless to try and continue, however, love powered through. Our relationship had to survive a lot; shut downs, tragedy, multiple family vacations, James getting bit by a dog, and Eryn realizing James' sarcasm has no off switch. Through it all we have persevered and stuck with each other. This would not have been possible without an enormous amount of outside help by family, friends, pastors, teachers, parents, grandparents, and most importantly God, helping and looking out for us by putting obstacles in front of us to overcome and bring us together. All of our years together have been consumed by millions of choices. Our choices led us to an early morning of "Yes, I’ll marry you” in Door County and to the even greater choice of "I do” in Watertown. We invite you all to be a part of our choice and to celebrate us choosing forever with each other.
