It was girls weekend down at my family's beach condo with three of my sorority sisters, Emily, Nakia & Julia. Due to the COVID climate at the time, we planned to keep it a "low-key" weekend. We walked on the beach, floated in the ocean, went kayaking, watched a LOT of Selling Sunset on Netflix and made most of our meals at the condo. It was a perfect little getaway. Our final night of the trip we planned to go out to a nearby restaurant and take pictures on the beach in "real clothes." When that time came, none of us wanted to get off the couch. Just ONE more episode, then we'll get up! Three episodes later.... Emily is known for being our adventurous friend and we could tell she was getting antsy to get going. (Little did we know she was in on a big secret!) She finally stood up, turned of the TV and (kindly) yelled at us to get moving. As we approach the beach, we see the proposal set-up and we (except for Emily) think we're crashing someone else's proposal! I start to backtrack and suggest we get to the beach through another path when I see a guy in the distance. After a double take I look at my friends, speechless, shaking. THAT GUY IN THE DISTANCE WAS JAKE! Afterwards, he told me how he pulled it off and we called our families. We still went out to dinner that night - with a reason to celebrate! A sincere thank you to my cousins Janet & Jennifer for hiding Jake in the neighboring condo all day, helping get everything set up and capturing our special moment. SUPER kudos to Emily for keeping the secret not only from me, but all of us girls. It turned into a surprise for all of us and a memory that will last our lifetimes. The funniest part is, as soon as we landed and got in the rental car to drive to the condo, Nakia says, "Sal, what if Jake comes down to propose this weekend?!" I brushed it off so quickly and didn't give it another thought. "No way that's happening, that would be crazy!" ...If only I could have seen Emily's reaction in the back seat. :)
