The Proposal

08/26/2023

Riley: It is a tradition to go camping up by the North Shore every summer with Jake and Riggs (our fur baby). This was our annual camping weekend and Jake decided to plan a hike at Grand Portage State Park. It was a little further than we normally go but we wanted to see the falls and then hit Grand Marais on our way back to the campsite so we could stop at one of our favorite breweries up there (Voyageur Brewing Company). We arrived at Grand Portage State Park and started our hike to the main falls. Once we got there, it was PACKED with tourists. Jake suggested we take the more advanced hike and go see the mid falls which was about 4 miles total. I agreed but admittedly I was not thrilled to hike that far LOL. There was a beautiful spot where the trees had an opening, and you could see Lake Superior perfectly. It really was gorgeous. I told Jake I wanted to get a picture but there weren't many hikers around, so it was a process. He set up my phone on a rock and said we could capture the view with self-timer. I started to get ready for the picture and was trying my best to get Riggs situated. The next thing I knew Jake was on one knee and asking me to marry him. I blacked out and may have said a swear word or two (hence the music covering my foul language in the video haha). The video captures the moment perfectly. You can watch it above. Long story short, 8/26/23 has been the best day of my life so far and our annual camping trips up at the North Shore will hold an entirely new meaning for us. <3 Jake: We arrived to Grand Portage State Park and we did the mile or 2 hike to go see the tallest waterfall (where I was originally planning to propose until I saw how many tourists were on the platform to see it and I wanted it to be more sentimental with just the two of us). Instead, we asked for a picture together and I had the ring box in the front pouch of my jacket. When we got the pic I thought for sure that she felt the box so I was a little nervous on the inside that she knew what it was and I was overthinking it the rest of the hike. I asked Riley If she wanted to do the longer hike (5 or 6 miles) to the mid falls knowing that she really wouldn't want to but she would do it being we heard a couple tell us that it was a beautiful and scenic hike. I was hoping she would as well so I could find a better spot to pop the question.  At the beginning, we saw a really cool overlook of superior and I thought this might be the best spot but I knew we had to come back this way so I held out a bit longer. Along the hike we both thought we were lost at one point and we couldn’t find the mid-falls. We both were getting irritated and we were gassed. Riggs was being such a good boy but we were both crabby so we decided to head back to the cool overlook of Superior. I walked behind Riley with Riggs and when I knew we were about a half mile from the scenic route I was starting to freak out a bit on the inside. When we finally got to the spot, I had found a big boulder to rest my phone on and used our water bottle to prop it up for a self-timer “picture”. I asked Riley to take Riggs and she found a good spot to stand while I set up video on purpose rather than a timed photo. By the time I walked back and got down on a knee I blacked out. I remember her not looking at me right away and when she finally looked at me, she was shocked. When I asked I don't even think she heard what I said I will never forget that moment being she said "Jacob, are you f***ing kidding me?!" She started crying and said “YES!" and gave me a hug and kiss. There may have been some more foul language. So, for those of you wondering.. Yes, that's why Riley put a song over the audio in the video.. LOL In my backpack I had Hidden a bottle of champagne in my joggers, and two silicone wine glasses. Overlooking our engagement spot we popped the bottle of champagne before heading back to the car. It was a moment I will never forget with my best friend.

For all the days along the way
