At Grand Canyon University, nestled in the vibrant desert city of Phoenix, Arizona, two souls were destined to meet. Mark, an international student from Uganda, had taken on the role of a Resident Assistant (RA) in one of the apartment buildings. A few stories up lived Jael, a spirited young woman from Long Beach, California, known for her radiant smile and passion for life. Their paths crossed before exchanging a single word with each other as Mark saw her at a distance and never forgot her face. It wasn't until one day when he happened to be at the RA desk and Jael entered the building that they exchanged their first words and became friends. Mark's calm demeanor and Jael's vivacious spirit complemented each other perfectly. They started with small talk whenever they would run into each other in the lobby and then one day Jael dared to ask him to hang out with her one day. Their first date landed on the day of love (Valentine's Day) when he picked her up from the residential hall and they grabbed dinner. They found themselves discussing their faith, and encouraging one another in their spiritual journeys. Both were in the process of maturing their walks with Christ and found solace and strength in their shared beliefs. As time went on, their friendship deepened. They spent countless hours talking about their dreams, fears, and everything in between. Mark admired Jael's unwavering faith and her ability to find joy in the simplest of things. Jael, in turn, was inspired by Mark's resilience and the wisdom he carried from his experiences back home. The day came when their hearts recognized what their minds had been too cautious to admit—they were in love. Their relationship, rooted in a solid foundation of friendship and faith, grew stronger with each passing day. However, their journey was not without challenges. After a year of dating, Jael graduated college in April 2023. Yet, they are the same age, Mark still had to finish another year of college as he was set to graduate in December of 2024. They were faced with the daunting task of maintaining a long-distance relationship. For almost two years, they navigated time zones, late-night calls, plane rides to CA and AZ, and the ache of physical separation. Yet, their love never wavered. They prayed together, supported each other, and held on to the promise that God had a plan for their lives. Finally, the day came when Mark graduated from college! Reunited at last in Califonia, their hearts brimmed with joy and gratitude. The trials they faced only strengthened their bond, and by God's favor, they knew they were meant to be together. Now, standing hand in hand, they are ready to take the next step in their journey. Surrounded by family and friends, they will exchange vows, promising to love and support each other through all of life’s adventures.
